Less than two weeks from now, the great and the good of British sport will converge on London's ExCel arena to see one of the finest sporting years this country has ever seen celebrated.

The BBC's Sports Personality of the Year award is a prestigious title to win at any time, but the 2012 winner will have to stand out from a crowd of Olympic champions who delighted the nation in the summer.

Among the shortlisted twelve is Walsall's very own golden girl, Ellie Simmonds. The Paralympic swimmer will take her place alongside the likes of Jessica Ennis, Mo Farah, Bradley Wiggins and Andy Murray to battle it out for the public vote on December 16.

In an interview given over the weekend, Ellie said: " Having three Paralympians nominated for the award (herself, David Weir and Sarah Storey) is amazing.

For me, it's a huge honour. I hope that one day a Paralympian could win it, I don't see why not."

So, will you be voting for Walsall's champion on the night? Do you regard Ellie as an inspiration for local people, and do you think she has a chance of picking up the award considering the strength of the competition? Let us know.
