INTREPID Walsall women are being urged to join a fund-raising walk as part of the Advertiser's Helen's Appeal.
Susan Stokes, right, will be taking part in the 2012 Starlight Walk in memory of her late husband. She is pictured with St Giles Walsall Hospice fundraiser Sharon White. Picture: Mark Theisinger.
The Starlight Walk will be held in aid of our campaign to raise £10,000 for St Giles Walsall Hospice.
Joining this year's fund-raising event will be Walsall woman Susan Stokes, who will be pounding the pavements in memory of her husband.
Susan, aged 57, said: "After my husband passed away, a friend said to me 'walk, you must walk', so I did. Walking has helped me grieve and soon it will help me make a contribution to the hospice.
"In three weeks' time, I will complete the Starlight Walk for Helen's Appeal – it is, for me, both an act of remembrance and an act of - for the St Giles staff.
"For my husband, the hospice was a familiar place that he felt an affinity with.
"I was able to share that experience because of the amazing care, dedication and friendship that the St Giles nurses gave both of us during his final hours."
And now Susan is calling on Walsall women to lace up their walking boots and join in with the fun.
It will take place on Saturday, September 22 in Aldridge.
She added: "This autumn, I want hundreds of women to join us at the Starlight Walk.
"It's a great way for all Advertiser readers to support Helen's Appeal – because men can get involved too by sponsoring a loved one who takes part.
"The high standards that the St Giles nurses achieve deserve this community's support – so come on Walsall, join me at the Starlight Walk."
Helen's Appeal is a joint campaign by the Advertiser and St Giles Walsall Hospice to raise the funds needed to support the work of clinical nursing manager Helen Simkins at the hospice for six months.
