FESTIVE cheer will spread across Walsall with a stockingful of events set to be unwrapped as the town steps into Christmas.

With Italian markets, late-night shopping, a free daytime party, a pop-up craft shop and real reindeer, it's beginning to look a lot like Christmas.

Walsall Council's town centre management team has been working with traders to come up with a festive feast of events and entertainment.

And organisers are hoping the people of Walsall will support the 'ho-ho-host' of events in the countdown to Christmas.

The popular Italian market will be making a welcome return with two set to run in Park Street from December 13-15 and 20-22.

A pop-up craft shop will also be giving those who are young and young at heart the chance to get creative when it opens its doors in the Saddlers Centre from December 10-16.

Before then, Walsall Music Festival will be tuning in with visitors when it plugs into action on Saturday, December 1.

Music to cater for different tastes will be on offer at various location in the town centre with Leicester Street hosting live music tents, street entertainment and art activities between 11 am and 5pm.

Walsall Town Hall will form the centrepiece of the event with free family activities and musical interludes during the day concluding with a ticketed evening concert featuring Reverend and the Makers.

Dr Zoolittle's mini farm is also set to delight crowds on December 8 with a visit by Rudolph and his fellow reindeer friends the following Saturday (December 15).

Councillor Adrian Andrew, Walsall Council Coalition portfolio holder for regeneration, said: "We have been working with traders to offer a range of Christmas events in Walsall to appeal to all.

"Younger visitors will love the mini farm and reindeer while shoppers who want to enjoy something more traditional will find the Italian markets are a joy.

"The pop-up craft shop will also continue the traditional theme while a livelier atmosphere is promised at the free daytime party as part of Walsall Music Festival."

Cllr Andrew added: "Walsall has a lot to offer with a range of shops offering plenty of gift ideas to suit all budgets and we look forward to plenty of hustle and bustle this festive season."

Thursday late-night shopping will see most stores in Walsall town centre open until 7pm or 8pm from Thursday, November 29, with a run of events in the Old Square Shopping Centre.
