Dean Smith is hopeful that last night's draw against League One leaders Tranmere can prove to be a turning point in the Saddlers' season.

Walsall put in an impressive display to hold the leaders to a goalless draw, their second point picked up on the road in four days.

"I thought we were excellent," Smith told the club's official website.

"I'll take that performance all day long; we stood firm and worked hard against the league leaders.

"The clean sheet gives us a foundation to build upon. Our last two displays have given us confidence, which we will take into Saturday's game against Hartlepool," he told www.saddlers.co.uk.

Saddlers fans will be looking at that fixture as the one which could finally end the long winless run, as Hartlepool currently sit rock bottom of the league and have picked up just eight points all season.

Walsall last tasted victory at the end of September - 14 games ago.
