LEGENDARY rock classic Jesus Christ Superstar will be making its anticipated return to the Birmingham NIA in the new year.

The show, which was lauded as "hugely successful" by critics when it visited Birmingham earlier this year, is headlined by its original, star-studded cast.

This includes comedian Tim Minchin as Judas, Spice Girl Melanie C as Mary Magdalene and former king of the radio himself, Chris Moyles, as King Herrod.

For those who don't know, Jesus Christ Superstar, by Tim Rice and Andrew Lloyd Webber, is a rock opera based loosely on the Gospel's accounts of the last week of Jesus' life.

Lloyd Webber said: "This year's tour was the first-ever UK arena tour of Jesus Christ Superstar and it surpassed our expectations.

"The response from audiences across the UK and Ireland was overwhelming and the show was everything I had hoped for.

"It's great news that fans will have a final chance to see the show with the original arena tour cast in the New Year."

Playing the role of Jesus will be Ben Forster, winner of ITV talent contest Superstar.

The 31-year-old battled it out among hundreds of contenders to play the coveted role. He was announced winner in July.

After his win, the show went on tour across the country, touring from Glasgow to London between September 21 and October 21.

Jesus Christ Superstar was first produced as an album before being staged on Broadway and then catapulting to British fame in the West End of London.

It was stunning for its use of, for instance, electric guitars as part of the beat.

Adaptations of the popular musical have been performed across the world, making it one of the most well-known musical productions.

Other cast members include Alexander Hanson, who plays the role of Pilate. Alex is known for his appearances in several West End musicals, most notably in The Sound of Music and We Will Rock You.

Tickets are priced at £45, £55 and £65, plus booking and transaction fees.
