Helen's Appeal - help us to make a real difference
By Walsall Advertiser | Friday, August 17, 2012, 09:00
THE Advertiser is launching a major campaign today to enable a nurse to provide high-quality care for seriously ill people and their families in Walsall.
Joining forces with the St Giles Walsall Hospice, we are aiming to raise £10,000 to support the vital work of clinical nursing manager Helen Simkins for six months at the Goscote Lane facility.
Since opening last year, 250 people have been cared for at the state-of-the-art centre by Walsall nurse Helen and her team.
And now we are calling on you, the readers, to help raise the much-needed funds required.
Peter Holliday, chief executive of St Giles Hospice, said: "Helen has been an invaluable part of the team since the doors first opened at St Giles Walsall Hospice – her caring nature and out-going personality have brought great warmth into the lives of our patients, as well as their families and carers.
"As a charity, we have to raise £10,000 every six months to fund Helen's work – Helen's Appeal gives Advertiser readers a fantastic chance to take part in our fundraising activities and to help us reach our goal for Walsall residents living with cancer and other serious illnesses."
Each day, Helen endeavours to deliver the specialist treatments and understanding support that allows Walsall residents to live with dignity during some of their toughest moments at the £4.5 million Goscote Lane centre, which opened its doors in April 2011.
And to get our campaign off to a flying start, readers can make a donation today, get involved in one of the many fundraising events coming up in the next few weeks and months or even seize the initiative and organise their very own event.
Advertiser editor, Gary Phelps, said: "For over 20 years, St Giles cared for Walsall residents at its facilities across the region – today, we are extremely lucky to have an exceptional care centre on the doorstep.
"St Giles Walsall Hospice delivers a priceless service, yet it is reliant upon the public's kind-hearted donations and contributions.
"To have a Walsall nurse funded by Walsall people would be a great way to say thank you for the great care provided by Helen and the St Giles team."
Information about up-coming events will appear in the Advertiser each week during the campaign as well as information on how you can support this campaign.
