A GENEROUS £1,000 contribution has signalled the first donation to the Advertiser's campaign.

The WS3 Friends of St Giles Walsall Hospice group have donated the cash less than a week after Helen's Appeal launched.

And the Bloxwich-based hospice supporters have told how they jumped at the chance to get the appeal off to a great start.

Kath Phillips, WS3 Friends group member and Walsall councillor, said: "Helen's Appeal needs everyone's support.

"The St Giles nurses perform an incredible service for seriously-ill local people and their families, helping them through testing times.

"We are delighted to make the first donation towards the campaign and hope it will encourage Advertiser readers to join in with fundraising events or even to organise their own."

The WS3 Friends of St Giles Walsall Hospice group is made up of five members and was founded three years ago.

"We raised the funds in various ways," added Cllr Phillips. "We've arranged coach tours and luncheon trips, we ran a stall when the Olympic torch passed through town – just anything we've been able to do to raise funds.

"Every little bit donated brings us closer to making a success of Helen's Appeal."
