SHOPPERS in Walsall town centre have been given an early Christmas present after it was announced that more than 1,300 free parking spaces will be made available in the run-up to the big day.
The borough's transport bosses unwrapped their plans for the shopping incentive this week as the countdown to Christmas begins.
Council chiefs have decided to suspend charges at weekends – starting form Saturday, December 8 – as a boost to businesses and shoppers.
As festive fever sweeps through the town, Christmas shoppers will be given a helping hand by being able to take advantage of free parking at all Walsall Council-operated off-street car parks during the weekends of December 8 and 9, 15 and 16, and 22 and 23, in addition to the usual free parking on Christmas and New Year bank holidays.
Councillor Tom Ansell, Walsall Council Coalition portfolio holder for transport and the environment, said: "I'm pleased to announce that the council will once again be offering free parking on the run-up to Christmas.
"We want to support our businesses and encourage visitors to stay that bit longer to experience the Christmas atmosphere and all that Walsall has to offer."
Motorists are reminded that the suspension of charges applies to council-run off-street car parks in the town centre only and will still have to ensure that they park in the correct bays and observe time limits.
Meanwhile, Christmas shoppers looking to get their gift-buying done early will be able to take advantage of Thursday late-night shopping from today (November 29), which will see most stores in Walsall town centre stay open until 7pm or 8pm over the next few weeks.
