Plenty of students across Walsall are celebrating today after picking up their GCSE results, including those at Barr Beacon School.
Barr Beacon has seen an astonishing turnaround
The previously failing school has this year recorded its best ever GCSE results, with 80% of pupils attaining A*- C grades including both Maths and English.
This not only represents a nine per cent increase on last year, but means that the school have virtually doubled their success rate in just five years.
Headteacher Dame Mo Brennan took over after OFSTED gave the school 'notice to improve' after just 41% of pupils attained the benchmark A*- C grades.
She said today: "In five years we have worked to make sure that Barr Beacon becomes one of the leading schools in the West Midlands.
"Soon after I started we set ourselves a tough target of 80% and everyone laughed; they said it couldn't be done. But no-one is laughing at us now. From a school given notice to improve to one of the highest-achieving non-selective schools in the country is a massive achievement."
She says the results reflect the 'combined hard work of pupils, parents, staff and governers, and believes that the time put in by pupils and teachers has contributed to the success.
